Defensive blocking (DPML, GlobalBlock, AdultBlock)

Defensive blocking prevents third parties from registering a domain that matches your trademark in a whole group of extensions, through a single order, without registering each name yourself.

Protecting a name without registering it everywhere

Registering your brand in every extension is neither possible nor useful: there are hundreds of them, and most of the names would never be used. Blocking services offer another route. A block reserves your trademark across a set of extensions so that third parties cannot register it, and it is renewed as one item rather than as hundreds of domains.

The three blocks

  • DPML blocks your trademark across the extensions operated by the registry group that offers it.
  • GlobalBlock blocks your brand across a wide range of generic, country code and newer extensions in a single order. Through Domgate, corporate clients can activate it, and its coverage grows as new extensions join.
  • AdultBlock blocks your brand in the adult-themed extensions, where an unwanted registration would harm your reputation most.

Why it matters

A block replaces many defensive registrations and leaves no portfolio of unused domains to renew. It also closes the extensions where infringements are likely before they happen, which reduces the cases you would otherwise have to fight one by one.

Corporate clients order and activate their blocks through Domgate. A block sits alongside the domains you do register, such as the country code domains of the markets where you sell.
