Every registry sets its own rules

Every extension is run by a registry that sets its own registration policy and terms. For generic extensions, ICANN's policies also apply, including the uniform dispute procedure. For country code extensions, disputes follow the procedure of the registry or of the arbitration centre it has designated, and some have none. Registering through Domgate is governed by our Registration Agreement, and every registration must also meet the rules of its extension. On each card, the links to the registry's site, its rules and its IANA record open in a new tab.

Country code extensions (ccTLDs) follow the rules of their own registry: its registration policy, its dispute procedure and its transfer procedure. ICANN's policies, such as the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and the Transfer Policy, apply to generic extensions; a ccTLD registry applies them only where its own policy says so.

An example: Afnic

Afnic, the registry of .fr, .re, .pm, .tf, .wf and .yt, publishes its Naming Policy on its website. Anyone who applies for a domain name under these extensions is deemed to have read it. The version that applies is the one in force on the date Afnic receives the request, and the policy is written in French and in English; if their meaning differs, the French version prevails.

Generic extensions (ICANN)

Generic extensions, such as .com, are governed by ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. Domgate is not accredited by ICANN: generic extensions are registered through a registrar that ICANN has accredited, which sponsors the registration.

The registrar that sponsors a domain name appears in its public registration record (RDAP), which our whois lookup displays.

ICANN publishes the rules that apply to generic extensions:

Sources

Registry names come from the IANA Root Zone Database, which we read again every month; the date of the last reading is shown under the list. The links to each registry's policy, terms and dispute procedure come from our extension pages, and we check them every month.

If a link no longer works, if a registry has changed its rules, or for any question about a registry's rules, write to [email protected].
